A Pokémon trading card depicting Pikachu in a grey felt hat, similar to Van Gogh's famous "Self-Portrait with a Grey Felt Hat" painting," is no longer available for sale at Van Gogh Museum due to safety concerns, the museum announced. AMSTERDAM – The Vincent Van Gogh Museum, located in Amsterdam, Netherlands, will no longer sell limited-edition Pokémon trading cards depicting the 19th century painter due to safety concerns, the museum announced.

The trading cards featured Pikachu wearing a grey felt hat, similar to Van Gogh’s famous “Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat” painting, and were sold as part of a collaboration between the museum and The Pokémon Company that launched Sept. 27. The collaboration celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Van Gogh Museum, as well Van Gogh’s connection with Japanese art and culture, according to the museum.

However, the Pokémon-Van Gogh trading cards quickly sold out due to swarms of visitors at the museum’s shops. While the Van Gogh Museum didn’t provide specific details on what led to the end of the promotion, some reports claim many of the museum’s visitors were scalpers seeking to re-sell the cards for profit.

However, while the Pikachu-Van Gogh trading card is no longer for sale at the Van Gogh Museum, Pokémon will reintroduce the promo card at retailers in the Netherlands next year, according to the museum. The promo card will also be available to those in the United States, Canada, and United Kingdom via online marketplaceAdditional Van Gogh-inspired Pokémon paintings are still available for viewing at the Van Gogh Museum through Jan. 7, 2024.
