The invasion of Gaza is likely to lead to mass deaths among Palestinian civilians as well as Israeli soldiers
It may prove to be the worst massacre of Israeli civilians in the country’s 75-year history. Joe Biden cited the atrocity, when he warned Israel’s enemies that the US stands resolutely behind its ally, and compared Hamas to Isis . The tiny, densely populated strip is a warren of underground tunnels, rubble and tight streets – perfect for ambushes. People there live in appalling conditions, and they have now been written off as collateral damage by Hamas leaders who hope to provoke uncontrolled rage from Israel.
As a state with access to advanced weaponry and surveillance, Israel is humiliated by Saturday’s attacks. Yet occupying Gaza is not a long-term solution to the conflict, and the likely blood loss will spawn future generations of militants.Oliver Duff
