She is an artist who cherishes, honours and elevates her materials. Her Spike Island exhibition included fruit peels held together with sutures, ruffs deftly stitched together from tea bags, seed pods held in long, coloured crocheted nets, towers made from stacked fruit packaging, and soursop skins sculpted in clay then glazed with ash from the volcano that destroyed the town of her birth in the mid-90s.
As the marketing-savvy, tabloid-friendly circus around Hirst and his irony-drenched coterie came to dominate British art in the 90s, artists who didn’t fit the new sensibility were pushed out of view. Ryan had taught several of the younger artists at Goldsmiths, University of London. She watched her former students exploding on to the scene with interest.
As wonderful as it was to be “acknowledged and validated” by the Turner win, Ryan says that “to have been shortlisted at 66 and to have not got it would have actually been very difficult”. As with Himid’s win in 2017 at the age of 63, much has been made of Ryan’s age .
