Cristian Javier will begin this year in the Astros' bullpen, resuming a role in which he didn't establish much of a rhythm last season.JUPITER, Fla. — Cristian Javier did not get demoted to the bullpen last season. Circumstance and a starting pitching surplus forced him there. The team envisioned Javier as a multi-inning relief weapon but needed to keep him stretched out in case a spot in the rotation opened.
Javier will open the season in Houston’s bullpen as a long reliever, spot starter and swingman, manager Dusty Baker said Monday, all but cementing the Astros’ five-man rotation to start the regular season.
