Officer Marcos Bocanegra shot the 16-year-old after the boy grabbed a gun from under the seat of a pickup
Carlsbad police on Wednesday released body-worn camera video that shows an officer shoot a 16-year-old boy in the arm after the teen grabbed a gun from a pickup. The shooting occurred about 12:45 a.m. Sept. 9 after Officer Marcos Bocanegra noticed the truck being driven recklessly in a dirt lot near the intersection of Carlsbad Boulevard and Palomar Airport Road, according to police. An adult and four teens were in the pickup, and the group had alcohol beverages, police said.
From the driver's side, the other officer observes, then tells the teen not to reach under the seat. The officer then yells, 'Gun, gun gun!' as the teen pulls out a handgun, turns around counter-clockwise — facing Bocanegra briefly — and runs away. He did not appear to point the gun at the officers. Bocanegra fires a round as the teen runs. Police said the teen was struck in his right arm. He continued until he jumped and fell down a nearby bluff. The gun landed close by.
