'The scenes of the aftermath of yesterday's earthquake are just heartbreaking. My deepest condolences to the many bereaved.'
A vigil is to be held this evening in honour of those who have lost their lives in the huge earthquakes which hit Turkey and Syria.Organised by the Derry Anti War Coalition, the vigil is also to show solidarity to Turkish and Syrian residents of the city.On the vigil's Facebook event page, it read: "Two massive earthquakes have hit Southern Turkey and Northern Syria."Much of Northern Syria has already been decimated by war, the suffering of these people is unimaginable.
"There is a sizable Turkish and Kurdish community in Derry. Many of them have family and friends caught up in this awful tragedy. We need to let them know that they are not alone. That Derry is a place that will stand with them.The vigil comes as many Derry representatives and politicians have offered their condolences to those impacted by the devastating earthquakes.
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Sandra Duffy, said: "My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Turkey and Syria today and all those who have lost and are searching for loved ones. "The scenes of the aftermath of yesterday's earthquake are just heartbreaking. My deepest condolences to the many bereaved."
Foyle MP Colum Eastwood said: "The footage coming from Turkey and Syria of the earthquake aftermath is horrifying.
