Like most retrospectives, the exhibition offers biographical detail through which to view the work. Born in Riga, Latvia, Celmins and her family fled the Soviet army toward the end of World War II and then lived in a refugee camp in Germany until they moved to the United States.
In the early 1960s, she moved to Los Angeles—and was among the first wave of artists to discover Venice—living in a storefront with no real bathroom or kitchen, according to theBut while the exhibition points out how historical and geographical factors influenced Celmins , it is less interested in pinning down these factors than in presenting a more schematic sense of their impact. It gestures to the themes—and objects—that remained with her throughout.
