Watch: Viral videos capture young Black girls reacting to Little Mermaid’s Black Ariel
News of Bailey’s casting as Ariel ignited a backlash in 2019, when some on social media used the hashtag #NotMyAriel to argue that casting a Black woman in the role went against the original film.was originally published as a short story in Denmark in 1837. In the original animated 1989 film, Ariel is depicted as a white, red-haired mermaid.
“It was an inspiring and beautiful thing to hear their words of encouragement, telling me, ‘You don’t understand what this is doing for us, for our community, for all the little Black and brown girls who are going to see themselves in you.’” And the response made her wonder how she would have felt had the cartoon version of Ariel been a person of color, Bailey told the magazine.
“What that would have done for me, how that would have changed my confidence, my belief in myself, everything,” she said. “Things that seem so small to everyone else, it’s so big to us.”.
