New surges of COVID-19 are disrupting the peak holiday season across much of Europe, where authorities are closing dance clubs, banning fireworks and expanding mandatory mask orders even in chic resort areas.
In addition to clubs and alcohol-fueled street parties, large family gatherings – usually abounding with hugs and kisses -- have been cited as a source of new outbreaks in several European countries.
Some of the toughest new measures were announced in Spain, which has recorded almost 50,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the past 14 days. Italy's Health Ministry said 574 new COVID-19 cases were recorded on Friday — the highest daily number since May 28. service said Paris and Marseille have been declared at-risk zones. “The situation is deteriorating from week to week,” the official, Jérôme Salomon, said on France Inter radio.
“Fortunately, they said in the case of this happening, they had a stand-by helper,” he said before boarding a Eurostar train to London. “So I’m really upset because I was having a good time looking after the cats and exploring Paris.” --South Korea reported 103 new cases, one of its biggest daily jumps in months. Officials expressed concern that infections are getting out of control in Seoul and other major cities as Koreans increasingly venture out in public.
