Before May gets away from us, the folks at Memorial Park would like to remind everyone that Texas wildflowers are in full bloom there this month.

A colorful patch of Indian blanket wildflowers grows near the Eastern Glades section at Memorial Park.Texas wildflowers are in full bloom this month at Memorial Park with a multitude of colors, textures and shapes, so it’s a great time to visit.

Thomas said the perennial native plants take advantage of the spring months to grow and rapidly blossom before the grasses shoot up above them or trees drop dense leaves. Although wildflowers and flowering plants are in their peak beauty across the park, they are especially vibrant in the bioswales in the Clay Family Eastern Glades parking lot, along the slopes of Hines Lake and across the Gulf Coast prairie running along the park’s west side.

MPC teams strategically source, grow and seed species that grow naturally in Harris County and are adapted to the area’s climate and ecosystem. Therefore, they can withstand the large amount of Houston’s rainfall has each year but are equipped to make it through dry periods as well. Thomas said the big winter freeze in February 2021, for example, left nearly no damage to the park’s native species.

The summer temperatures are cranking up quickly, but Thomas said it’s great to visit Memorial Park any time of the year. The park offers shaded areas at places like the Wetland Boardwalk in Clay Family Eastern Glades or the Bayou Wilds trails. To shake the heat, Thomas recommends visiting weekdays before 10 a.m., but she also loves to go out near dusk as the frog species’ calls rev up and create a “symphony,” and the variety of bat species fly over Hines Lake.
