Now, more than six months into the pandemic, it’s easy to think about a “before” and “after”—those days when we lived in blithe ignorance, and the categorically different days that followed, in which lives, routines, and livelihoods were profoundly disrupted. But in the spring, there was something of an in between—weeks and months in which we didn’t quite know how long all this would last or where it was going.
. There was Donatella Versace, peering through the window of her Milan apartment; Annie Leibovitz, in her pajamas, sorting laundry with a jug of bleach by her feet; Ashley Graham, holding her newborn son on a windswept Iowa farm—a scene that could not feel further from the runway. That project also made up our June/July issue—a special issue, conceived and executed with unprecedented speed, as the world around us changed day to day.
