Saturday was a busy one along the Fox River as an army of volunteers descended along the banks and into the water to clean the waterway during “It’s Our Fox River Day” hosted by the River Corridor Foundation.
The clean-up effort took place all along the waterway, from Waukesha, Wisconsin, down to Ottawa, Illinois.In St. Charles, organizers said a total of nine stations were operating during the event that was coordinated in partnership with the River Corridor Foundation, the St. Charles Park District and The Conservation Foundation.
“The first couple of years we did things we picked up a lot of things along the shorelines and last year or maybe the year before the river was very low as it is this time, and we were able to wade out into the river in some areas and find things that were there a long time,” he said. Over the years, Rabchuk said he is “discouraged to see any trash at all, but the last couple of years there has been more pocket trash like water bottles.”
Elgin resident Gary Swick, a member of the Friends of the Fox River group, was on hand with a number of other members and said “this is the biggest populated event in the watershed so far.” Laura Miller Hill of St. Charles, a St. Charles Natural Resources Commission member, was on hand with her husband Greg.
