It’s why, sometime in the near future, whether it’s next season or the one after, the Knicks should retire his No. 7 jersey and hang it in the rafters at MSG.
Anthony gave the Knicks style. He made them fun. He jab stepped and slid into midrange jumpers. He bullied his way to the rim. He pulled up for 3s in transition and bopped three fingers against his head three times as the Garden soared. The Knicks have had so many lean seasons during the last 20-plus years, but Anthony is responsible for so many of the brighter moments.and Sprewell roamed the court. The team won 54 games — the most by any Knicks team since 1997.
The Knicks have been restrained in the numbers they have retired, clutching to a golden age and letting few others in the club. Six of the eight numbers belong to members from the title teams of the 1970s. Ewing got his up there after a legendary career. It took the team 32 years after Dick McGuire to hang his No. 15.Anthony should join them. He spent his prime in New York. His 24.7 points per game is the third-highest in franchise history, and his 10,186 points rank seventh best.
