Sir Keir Starmer repeatedly vowed not to raise taxes on 'working people' ahead of the election

Sir Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves vows ‘working people’ would be protected from tax rises during the election campaignMore than half of voters believe Labour was dishonest over its tax plans during the general election campaign, a poll has found.

During the general election campaign, Mr Starmer and his team repeatedly pledged not to raise taxes on “working people”. Chancellor Rachel Reeves may, however, find it easier to argue that raising capital gains tax is in line with Labour’s election pledges, with 36 per cent saying this would not hit working people, versus 35 per cent who believe it would.Mr Starmer was also accused of subtly watering down his election pledge this week, having previously defined working people as those who “earn a living”, rely on public services and “don’t have the ability to write a cheque when they get in trouble”.

The Prime Minister’s net satisfaction rating has dropped from -3 per cent to -16 per cent since early August, while Labour’s support among the public has dipped three points to just 30 per cent – a second decline in its share of the vote since the election. “The Reform Party appears to be the main beneficiary. Its share is growing, nearing 19 per cent – matching the joint highest level we’ve recorded for Farage’s party.
