Jimmy Kimmel was the last person to host the Oscars in 2018. Kevin Hart was announced as the 2019 host, but stepped down from the gig after controversial past tweets resurfaced. The Oscars went hostless in 2019, 2020 and 2021. Last year was the lowest-rated Oscars telecast ever.
ABC announced in January the 2022 Oscars would be helmed by a celebrity, and a wide net was cast to find the show’s headliners.stars Selena Gomez, Martin Short and Steve Martin were reportedly on top of the network’s wishlist. Aside from their cross-generational appeal, it would have been strong cross-promotion for their show, which airs on Hulu and, like ABC, is owned by Disney.
