A sensible compromise fails to win support.
A last-minute attempt to reach a reasonable compromise over the chaos at the Mexican border failed at the finish line, meaning the record-breaking flood of undocumented immigrants is likely to grow this year.
Remember that when Fox News uses the chaos to demonize Democrats and President Biden. The truth is that this deal was an olive branch that most Republicans spurned, one that devoted at least $25 billion to border security and detention centers. That’s more for enforcement than President Trump proposed in his 2018 border proposal.
For other Republicans, opposition to this bill seems based on a more cynical calculation: They want the issue. They want to beat Democrats over the head with this. Consider the antics of Gov. Greg Abbott in Texas and Gov. Ron DeSantis in Florida, both presidential contenders who are sending busloads of asylum seekers north, often without telling them where they are headed. Solving this problem would take away an issue that plays for them in the base.
