Jeremy Hunt was quizzed over compensation to the millions of women who were hit by changes in the state pension age
Jeremy Hunt has refused to commit to compensation for 'Waspi women' in the Conservative election manifesto. While he said the triple lock for pensions would remain he gave no promises to those affected by over pensions changes.
The Government has been accused of failing to adequately inform those born in the 1950s about an increase in the entitlement age. This week the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman gave its ruling into the maladministration which saw potentially millions of women’s retirement plans thrown into disarray.
Speaking to the broadcasters on Sunday, the Chancellor denied pushing the decision to one side for a future administration to deal with because Labour was ahead in opinion polls leading up to this year’s general election. He insisted the Women Against State Pension Inequality campaign issues were “genuinely more complicated” than others in which compensation has been promised, including the infected blood disaster and the Post Office Horizon scandal.
“So it appears to say something different and we do need to get to the bottom of that apparent difference between the two.” He added: “We want to resolve it as quickly as we can, but there’s no secret vault of money. The money we would pay in compensation has to come from other taxpayers, so we do have to take time to get this fair.”
