The Bay Area made history this month by crowning its first-ever transgender Miss San Francisco.
Monroe Lace, a biological male who identifies as female, said it has always been a dream to win the title."I am literally still in disbelief," Lace, the first transgender winner in the organization's 99-year history, told Kron4 News."This is like such a dream come true. I've been dreaming about this since I was 12 years old."
This month, California crowned its new Miss #SanFrancisco, the first #transgender woman to win a title in the organization's 99-year history. Monroe Lace joined us this morning on @kron4news. #lgbtq pic.twitter.com/sVFSU2KuJu"When the crown was placed on my head, I was just in shock. ... I was literally like, 'This isn't real life.'"
The win was a very emotional moment for Lace, who has experienced homelessness and abuse, according to the interview. "Four years ago, I ran away from home, and I was homeless," Lace said."Two years ago, I was assaulted at gunpoint, and, to me, if I'm able to inspire a child who sees me and thinks to herself, 'I'm going to be okay,' then I've done my job."When Lace decided to compete in the Miss America Organization's competition, the now-Miss San Francisco said competing as"myself" was important.
"I knew there was a little girl out there or little child out there watching me, and I wanted them to know that if I can do it, they can too," Lace said.
