“I was really intrigued by a story that was actually very simple,” says director Chloe Okuno at Deadline’s Virtual Studio at Sundance. “Okuno was joined by the stars of the film Maika Monroe and Karl Glusman to discuss their film, follows Julia as she and her husband Francis move to an apartment in Bucharest, Romania. While Francis speaks the language and works during the day, Julia finds herself with nothing to do except walk around the area or stay in her apartment.
,” says Okuno. “I hope that in partnership with Maika, I could bring a sort of female perspective to it that makes it feel slightly different.” “Well, it’s incredibly relatable,” says Monroe. “When I read the script I just had so many experiences that were quite similar and there is nothing more frustrating than when a person doesn’t believe you or tells you that you’re being dramatic.”
While Julia is trying to keep a level head as she describes what she believes is going on, Francis is skeptical of the situation. In some thrillers the skeptical person isn’t always put in the best light, but Glusman brings a sympathetic attitude to Francis. “In a relationship,” says Glusman, “when someone has a problem or someone is going through something and the other person isn’t understanding what they’re going through… it’s not necessarily coming from a place of maliciousness.
