For Bury fans and chief executive Neil Sears, Saturday is hopefully just the start of the club's long journey back to the Football League

For Bury fans and chief executive Neil Sears, Saturday is hopefully just the start of the club's long journey back to the Football LeagueThis time around, on Saturday they will hope to do the same after a North West Counties Premier Division play-off — except this time they will celebrate without the spectre of debt and doom following them around.

But after last year’s merger between AFC and the other fan group that owned the stadium, Bury were back at home – and back came the crowds.“It’s quite curious because, these youngsters, they’ve not had football in a stadium like this and they’re not grown up with it as much, so they haven’t quite grasped all the nuances of it,” says Rudravajhala.

The task for chief executive Neil Sears, one of only two full-time staff at the club, is to manage expectations.Fans often compare their club to Salford City, a League Two side only six miles down the road, where the average home attendance is a couple of hundred lower than Bury’s this season. Fitting then that Bury’s plight five years ago fired the starter pistol on a race that will end when the new football regulator is created – but saving and resurrecting Bury FC itself has been the work of a community of fans and volunteers.

“And then realistically, what’s your wage budget in that division? National League North wage budget, you’re probably talking half a million a year. Ours is anywhere between probably 100 and 150 .”
