One man, 46, said he still does not feel ready to come out
The LGBTQ+ community has faced discrimination for years. The community as a whole have banded together countless times in the face of this, during the years before being gay was legalised, after the years when the AIDS crisis was all over the news and now the trans debate .
“We forged a path to allow for more acceptance and that same acceptance is now disappearing for people who want to be different, we were those people, we were the ones who faced stigma and discrimination and now another part of the community are facing the same thing. Michael, 72, was married for forty years and had two children. He said as a child he was holding hands with boys and it wasn't until he was 13 he realised people were "not supposed to be gay".YorkshireLive spoke to a gay man, who due to his work asked to remain anonymous. He said at 46 he still does not feel ready to come out.
Steve Hopker, 66, a Leeds community development worker for older gay men, spoke of his sense of guilt after coming out at a much later age than might be expected. He was 48 when he officially came out as gay and struggled with depression as a result.
