We don't talk enough about the long-term effect that HIV/Aids has on mental health ✍️ When we talk about falling ill, we tend to focus on physical symptoms rather than what is going on in our minds, but they go hand in hand 🔵 JasonReidUK

After Aids-related illnesses decimated my state of mind, it’s important people like myself document the aftermath of our experiencesWhen we talk about falling ill, we tend to focus on physical symptoms rather than what is going on in our minds, but they go hand in hand. Life-altering physical ill-health can be a catalyst for declining mental health and the effects can last for many years after the physical ailments have healed, as is my experience..

Now and then I launch myself out of bed and into the shower with gusto. I feel like I can take on the world. Those days are few and far between, and I end up exhausting myself because I want to make the most of being in that state. I think most people aren’t aware of the effect Aids has on a person’s long-term mental health when they pull through. Aids is seen and portrayed in the media as something that people died of in the 80s and 90s, and that was that. But there are many survivors like myself, and it’s important that we document the aftermath of our Aids experience – particularly for queer people whose stories are often diluted.

Pre-Aids, I never suffered from depression. I didn’t overthink. To be frank, I didn’t think too deeply at all. I didn’t struggle in social situations. I didn’t suffer from panic attacks. Post-Aids, I suffer from all of those things. That’s not to say I’m now constantly unhappy. What I now have is a unique perspective which shapes my mindset and carries me through the dark times. If I’ve learnt anything from years of talking therapy, it’s that one must face issues head-on. There’s absolutely no point in trying to run away from the mental health issues that trace back to the trauma I endured in that period of my life.was a skeletal 7 stone, and severely anaemic.
