“Our response that night was wholly inadequate and totally ineffective, and that will forever be a matter of deep regret for our service'

The chief constable of Greater Manchester Police has apologised “unreservedly” and admittedStephen Watson was speaking after the latest report from the public inquiry into the atrocity outlined a catalogue of mistakes by emergency services in the hours after the suicide bomber Salman Abedi detonated his device.

The chief constable of Greater Manchester Police at the time of the bombing, Ian Hopkins, has since stood down from his position at the request of Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham.Speaking at a press conference, his successor Mr Watson said the force “fully accepts” the findings of Sir John’s report and that the response on the night was “inadequate”.

He added that “the eyes of policing nationally” were on Sir John’s report and GMP’s learning was being “widely shared”.Former Chief Fire Officer Peter O’Reilly quit his post four months after the arena bombing following stinging criticism. Mr Russel said “wholesale” changes had been made to his organisation since the bombing, including a new dedicated radio channel between blue-light services.
