Dumbo fever started during the early days of COVID when most of the city was shut down and outdoor photoshoots were essentially the only option and it continues to be a popular spot today.
On a scorching Saturday afternoon in Brooklyn, a black SUV parks on the Instagram-famous intersection of Washington Street, between Front and Water. A bride, groom, two bridesmaids, and a photographer hop out of the car. They pose in front of the oft-photographed vista: the Brooklyn Bridge bisecting the crystal blue sky, two perpendicular rows of old New York buildings below.
A few weekends ago, newlyweds were zipping in and out of the area with professional photographers in tow. Diana Tashmatova, in a strapless wedding gown, posed with her husband by the water, fighting the natural elements , as she worked for the perfect photo. Once the sun started setting, a gentleman set up an elaborate proposal on the walkway— placing photographs of him and his significant other around a heart made of roses. A flash later, over on the beach, another proposal.
Some of those people are Emily Puhnaty, 31, a director at a nonprofit organization, and her husband. A few weeks ago, the couple got married at a venue in Gowanus and then traveled over to Dumbo for their post-wedding photos. The couple was motivated by the stunning beauty of the neighborhood, as it contains some of their favorite architecture. “We actually met while studying architecture at Carnegie Mellon,” Emily says.
