Felling has been paused
Developers in Wellingborough have announced the date they will be holding their much-anticipated public information exhibition regarding the controversial felling of trees along The Walks. Fifteen lime trees have so far been removed along London Road as part of the felling which residents and Wellingborough Town Council have branded "unlawful."
Developers announced yesterday that a public information exhibition drop-in will be held this Thursday, March 23 at the Swanspool Pavillion from 6pm-8pm. One director said the session would "help locals understand a bit more about the Stanton Cross development." It is not yet understood how this will impact the remaining 23 trees still earmarked for removal.
The felling along the "nationally important" Wellingborough Walks to allow works access to the creation of a dual carriageway along the A509 and expansion of the Tesco roundabout was revealed by Wellingborough Town Councillor Marion Turner-Hawes on February 14. A Save Our Trees campaign was launched by local residents, who argue an active Tree Protection Order protects the trees from being removed.
Residents further condemned developers and NNC at an extraordinary meeting of Wellingborough Town Council on March 9, where NNC was called "disgraceful" and denounced for their "lack of response". It was also claimed in the meeting that some Wellingborough councillors were not informed of the extent of the felling until just days before it was due to begin.
