The Visitor Levy (Scotland) Bill allows councils to add a charge to overnight accommodation such as hotels, B&Bs and holiday lets, and came into force at the start of the month.

West Dunbartonshire Council ’s leader has confirmed the local authority could consider introducing a visitor levy on tourists.

He commented: “I welcome the new powers to raise a visitor levy in West Dunbartonshire, but we still need to properly consider the implications for our current tourism businesses who could potentially be affected by increased costs for overnight stays. Many European countries, including tourist hotspots in Germany and Spain, already have so called ‘tourist taxes’ in place - with Edinburgh likely to be the first Scottish city to introduce a charge.

The Labour member added: “At present the tourism industry, COSLA and other partners are working to produce guidance for local authorities considering introducing a levy but this is not yet available.
