In a recent promotional video, Rishi Sunak appeared to model himself on David, the prime minister played by Hugh Grant in “Love Actually”. Could this have been deliberate?
Could this have been deliberate? Was Mr Sunak picturing the moment in Richard Curtis’s Christmas rom-com when Mr Grant’s character chats up his tea lady and dances around the prime-ministerial abode to “Jump ” by The Pointer Sisters? It would make sense, because David is one of the few sympathetic portrayals of a fictional prime minister in the history of cinema and television.
His fellow prime ministers are a lot less agreeable. In the “House Of Cards” trilogy , Francis Urquhart rises from the Conservative Party’s chief whip to top dog, largely because he is a Machiavellian murderer and blackmailer. Other homicidal British chiefs include Michael Rimmer in “The Rise And Rise of Michael Rimmer” and Sir Mortimer Chris in “Whoops Apocalypse” , both of them played by Peter Cook.
