This study proposed the idea that instead of deliberately accepting undemocratic behavior to gain something politically, people sidestep this tradeoff by rationalizing what they perceive to be democratic or undemocratic. Instead of justifying the behavior, they actually re-think their previous definition of. With this process, people don't need to feel the discomfort associated with the ends-justify-the-means kind of voting.
Democratic evaluation uses a different cognitive hijack. Instead of evaluating the behavior against typical democratic principles like the right to vote; a subtle shift in the definition of democracy happens where it is viewed in a broad, abstract way. Here, the logic is more like: This behavior will create a bad outcome for our country, our country is democratic; therefore this behavior must be undemocratic.
The results showed that when liberals read about undemocratic right-wing behavior, 62 percent of them perceived it to be highly undemocratic; however, when confronted with identical left-wing undemocratic behavior, only 36 percent perceived it as undemocratic.
