2011's The Thing prequel ends on a dark note for Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Kate, but the original screenplay made her fate completely clear.

Where did 2011's The Thing prequel leave Mary Elizabeth Winstead's survivor Kate? The Thing 2011 is one of the most unique reboots of a horror classic, as it both served as a prequel to John Carpenter's 1982 movie and something of a remake. The prequel explored what happened at the destroyed Norwegian research base seen in The Thing - which made the eventual fates of the 2011's movie cast of characters obvious to many.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The Thing prequel has its merits, including a solid cast, some intriguing new additions to the titular alien's biology and its impressive faithfulness to Carpenter's film. The final scene of the 2011 version even leads directly into the opening shots of 1982's The Thing.

In Heisserer's scripted The Thing ending, Kate and Carter had the only snowcat and used its fuel for their flamethrower. So in this version when she burns Carter, she's not only burning her remaining fuel, she's destroying the only snowcat. It ended with Kate, alone and crying, walking into the wind with no hope of rescue. Heisserer added another bleak detail, revealing on Twitter the ending would have paid off an earlier Carter line.

How Kate Lloyd Could've Survived In The Thing Universal wasn't quite committed to closing on that dark a note, and the ending they went for offered Kate a slim hope of survival . There's a chance Kate either managed to reach the Russian base on her own, or someone from that station came to investigate the spaceship and rescued her. Notably, her snowcat isn't present in John Carpenter's The Thing, suggesting she at least tried to drive to safety.
