According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Legionnaires’ disease is"a serious type of pneumonia caused by legionella bacteria." "People can get sick when they breathe in small droplets of water or accidently swallow water containing legionella into the lungs," the CDC states. The disease is not spread from person-to-person, however.

IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra said the disease typically begins within two weeks of exposure with a high fever, chills, muscle aches, a cough and shortness of breath. Diarrhea, nausea and confusion can also be found in patients, the CDC said.
