Tesla Autopilot has been in the public eye since 2014, but are its drivers even sure of what it’s supposed to do?
introduced its"Autopilot" system in 2014, the Sperry Corporation introduced automated systems in aircraft in 1912. Not everyone is an aircraft expert, but the basics seem obvious enough as they've trickled down through pop culture. Pilots take off from the runway, autopilot does most of the in-air work, and pilots intervene when necessary and land the plane themselves.
Autosteer is generally known as lane keeping assist and will maintain the vehicle's lateral position within a clearly marked lane during straight driving or the wider turns typical of highway driving. Again, the driver maintains control of the steering wheel, but the vehicle will automate steering inputs to steer and center within a lane. The inputs can be felt at the steering wheel and provide tactile feedback and reassurance that the driver is still in control but is being assisted.
The standard Autopilot of today's system does not automatically make lane changes, navigate expressway ramps, park, summon, navigate city streets, or recognize road signs and traffic lights. Those are all features included in Enhanced Autopilot or the beta FSD . And to be clear, no driver assist system from Tesla or any other manufacturer is approved to operate without driver attention to the vehicle and road. Autopilot specifically requires hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.
