“Adjusting our fascinators, we made a pact to count every person of colour we saw throughout the day...”
, I looked at her with complete confusion – I didn’t know much about Ascot, other than it’s a racecourse where an annual week-long event takes place for the royal family and white, privileged, frequently middle-aged members of the upper classes. All categories that, as a 25-year-old Black woman, exclude me.
So I set about preparing myself, inviting my more “tame” friends to join me. On the day – Ladies Day – we all discussed our expectations during the two-hour drive from London, predicting what the Queen would wear should she be well enough to attend, and how much we were willing to bet on horses. We decided we probably wouldn’t have a great deal of fun but congratulated each other on going, knowing we’d be the minority, promising to go out later to make up for it.
We saw another group of Black women who told me I had nothing to worry about . Black people coming to Ascot, they said, was nothing new – previously we were the minority, but a lot had changed, including the dress code; twenty years ago, the strict admittance policy wouldn’t have allowed dresses with spaghetti straps like mine, uncovered shoulders or trousers. The group lovingly scolded me about showing too much cleavage.
