“I mean, obviously, Joe was an unbelievable player, but this locker room is very tight-knit and we’re working to get better,” he added. “I’m working to get better. I know I need to improve and I promise, I’m doing everything I can to keep trying to get better. And so the focus is just to relax, rely on each other in this locker room and lean on each other because that’s all we got at the end of the day, and we’re going to do what we can to keep improving.
Wilson, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, was already facing an uphill battle with Jets fans. He was booed regularly on Sunday after throwing incomplete passes. He was yelled at as he departed the field. He was grilled with questions about why he hasn’t improved since last year’s debacle when he was benched twice and criticized harshly for his poor play and lack of accountability.
“He obviously was, you know, one of the greats,” Wilson said. “And so, you know, as an offense, we got to do everything we can to try and prove him wrong, keep doing what we can and improve. I think the guys are feeling very optimistic. You know, we all believe in each other.” Since taking over after Rodgers, Wilson hasn’t done much to change his naysayers’ minds. Despite the Jets’ revamped receiving corps, he ranks last in completion percentage , 30th in yards per game , and has thrown two touchdowns and four interceptions. This has resulted in the worst passer rating in the NFL among 34 eligible quarterbacks.
