As Rishi Sunak prepared to give his first Tory conference speech, the M.E.N. set about gauging the feeling inside and outside the conference centre

The streets of the city centre are fizzing with political debate. Manchester, once again, is hosting the Conservative Party Conference.

The political spotlight is on our city - for four days, at least. As Mr Sunak prepared to give his first Tory conference speech, the Manchester Evening News set about gauging the feeling inside and outside Manchester Central. "No," Tom said asked if the Conservatives will win next time round. "We have had multiple failures, we have had 13 years with a Tory PM. We have had so many of them too - you'd be a fool to think otherwise."Outside the venue was Ryan Kelly. "The country's in a bit of disarray at the moment, so I think we need change and a new approach," he said.

Oz Moss, 23, from Oldham said: "There needs to be more resources for homeless people. The government complains about taking in more refugees saying charity starts at home, but you never even see that. "It's going to be such a massive job and it's going to take time. Everything needs looking at the NHS needs looking at, education needs looking at, the cost of living needs looking at."Not everyone has confidence in Labour.

Max Woodvine, a 22-year-old Conservative councillor for Saddleworth South in Oldham, said: "I am not too disheartened yet. I think a lot can happen in 12 months. The PM still has time to turn things around.
