The news that the NFL would hold a sanctioned tryout for a figure most of its owners wouldn’t mind putting squarely in their rearview mirrors was thus startling. Per ESPN, the private workout will include on-field work and an interview, and all 32 teams are invited to attend. Later in the night Kaepernick, “I’m just getting word from my representatives that the NFL league office reached out to them about a workout in Atlanta on Saturday.
The timing is puzzling for a few reasons. Kaepernick, as he says, has been petitioning for this in one way or another since his alleged blackballing began, andon Wednesday morning that the timing of the league’s decision was a surprise. These workouts normally take place on Tuesdays; on Saturdays college games are scouted and teams are preparing for their own Sunday games. It’s all happening on four days’ notice too.
At a minimum the announcement seems to suggest some disorganization and frenzy around a high-profile situation. At worst the NFL is organizing a disingenuous opportunity to claim it’s giving Kaepernick a legitimate shot at resuming his career, and ESPN reported that his representatives have been wondering as much.
