Sunday is Juneteenth, the federal holiday which celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. While the holiday falls over the weekend, it will be observed on Monday.

The annual holiday had always been celebrated amongst communities of color but became a federal holiday last summer afterOn June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger informed the people of Texas that all enslaved people were free, thus establishing the basis for the holiday. Similarly to other federal holidays, to the general public, this means that we can expect to see U.S. Post Offices and government buildings being closed. Public schools will not be in session on June 20, in observance of the holiday. Many schools in the U.S. are already on summer break.
