By reaching 350 plate appearances, Giants outfielder Michael Conforto can become a free agent this offseason but says the milestone “wasn’t in the forefront of my mind.”
SAN FRANCISCO — Not to be lost in the trade deadline shuffle, Giants outfielder Michael Conforto reached a milestone over the weekend with implications for next season.
It was a meaningful moment, if only for the fact that is signaled Conforto has stayed on the field all season after missing all of 2022 recovering from shoulder surgery. Conforto is focused on getting back on track, which the Giants desperately need to fend off their postseason competition and will also inevitably factor into his decision at the end of the year. Caught up in a club-wide slump, Conforto’s batting line has slipped to .243/.333/.399 , almost identical to his last season pre-surgery, the worst statistical year of his career, with an OPS more than 100 points below his previous career average .
“I think I’ve done some good things. I’ve been a little inconsistent. There are some things I’d like to do better, play defense a little bit better,” he said. “It’s all stuff that helps the team. That’s more of my focus, less about potential free agency and more about winning games and helping us make this playoff push.”
