Allen is a symbol of the unheralded majority, the exhaustive list of names who attempt to crawl out from beneath the sport’s subconsciousness, coursing through NFL teams that are attempting to move on from mediocrity. It is a cycle as old as the game. It is one of its foundational themes. As the 1-8-1 Texans pursue purpose in the season’s final seven games, their midseason move to Allen underlines the plight of the team’s process and the hope that remains for those who don’t advance it.
Former coach Gary Kubiak benched Matt Schaub for Case Keenum in 2013 after Schaub threw more interceptions than touchdowns in his first six starts, which included an NFL-record four straight games with a pick-six. Schaub played in four more games that season, including starting twice after Kubiak was fired, but he was traded to the Raiders in the offseason.
Still, the franchise’s long-term goals cannot be ignored. Its short-term decisions logically affect them.
