Andy Burnham has said this is a 'huge day' for Greater Manchester
The English Devolution Bill, one of 40 pieces of legislation announced in the King's Speech today , makes devolving power the 'default setting'. It means the government will be forced to consider requests for more powers for local leaders like Andy Burnham .
Now the government has opened the door for even more power to be devolved. So what is the mayor planning to ask for? Mr Burnham argues that this type of 'supportive' approach is more effective in getting people into work. "We feel that the current system with all the tick boxes and sanctions leaves people further away from work rather than bringing them towards it," he said.
But another piece of legislation announced today would allow the city-region to go even further. As well as helping other areas follow Greater Manchester's by speeding up the process, the Better Buses Bill means local leaders could run buses themselves. The Greater Manchester mayor has also suggested that he will ask for more 'democratic control' over housing and education, saying that secondary schools should not be a 'no-go' for devolution. It comes as he launches the Manchester Baccalaureate as an alternative technical education route for teenagers who do not go to university, setting out specific GCSEs for different career paths.
