The search has begun to replace founding Executive Director Scott Knies, who is stepping down in November after 34 years.
San Jose Downtown Association Executive Director Scott Knies’ departure in November after 34 years has been in the works for a few years, but the reality is finally hitting as the business advocacy group has launched an official search for his successor.
Knies is going to be a hard act to follow. He has provided a friendly face — even during the mustache years — and a measured voice that worked as well at city council meetings as it did from the stage at Plaza de Cesar Chavez. But an equally important quality isn’t spelled out in the job summary: The person needs to get San Jose. And San Jose is complicated.
Downtown San Jose is on the verge of more construction chaos with Google and BART headed downtown, but it’s not in the sorry state it was in 1986, thanks in no small part to the work of the Downtown Association under Knies’ leadership. So Knies’ successor doesn’t need to be someone who can reinvent the wheel but maybe someone who can figure out how to make downtown fly.
