What to do to get your garden ready for fall tomatoes, from dealing with spider mites to fertilizer
The Rodeo Tomato of 2022 is STM2255, a determinate plant that produces a generous crop of large, globe-shaped tasty fruit with considerable disease resistance to alternaria, fusarium, verticillium and gray leaf spot.It is time to pull your spring tomatoes to make room for the fall crop. This year, that process becomes more complicated than usual when you factor in the severe drought, extremely high temperatures, drought restrictions and plant supply issues.
Pull out spring tomatoes now because they will become overwhelmed with spider mites after a spring of fruit production. Even tomatoes in containers were damaged, with root balls getting so hot that production was stunted. Some gardeners had to move their container plants out of the afternoon sun. Prepare the bed for fall tomatoes by incorporating 2 inches of compost and 10 cups of slow-release lawn fertilizer into every 100 square feet of bed. The 19-05-09 product works well, with 50 percent of the nitrogen released quickly and the other 50 percent released over the following three months.
