The Penn State faithful who braved the elements were rewarded with a good vibes victory over an overmatched UMass team.

The listed attendance total for the Nittany Lions’ 63-0 shutout was 105,533, an impressive figure given the elements and the fact that Penn State was a huge 41.5-point favorite over the Minutemen. James Franklin’s team covered that point spread comfortably, which has now become a trend this season. Penn State is now 6-for-6 in that department.

Temperatures were in the 40s and the rains started early in the day and persisted throughout the game, but six figures worth of fans still came out to see a winner. And now, Penn State has a big opportunity to get off to the most significant start of the James Franklin era when the team hits the road for Columbus and a noon ET matchup against Ohio State next weekend.

Penn State returns home against Indiana the following weekend, then travels to Maryland on Nov. 4 before another big showdown at home against Michigan on Nov. 11. Win or lose at Ohio State, the Nittany Lions will likely still have a path to a Big Ten title and/or a College Football Playoff berth by beating Jim Harbaugh’s Wolverines. That matchup might have a chance to bring a record-breaking crowd to Beaver Stadium.

While a nice showing for all kinds of reasons, Penn State’s crowd of 105,533 fans against UMass was well off the top 10 attendance figures in school history. Here’s a look at that list, last updated when the Lions played Iowa in front of a Whiteout and the second-largest crowd in school history.2. 110.830 - Sept. 23, 2023 - Penn State 31, Iowa 04. 110,753 - Sept. 14, 2002 - Penn State 40, Nebraska 76. 110,669 - October 19, 2019 - Penn State 28, Michigan 218.
