An atmospheric river is still sweeping through the Bay Area Saturday, with rainfall that could surpass meteorologists' original predictions.and triggering mudslides and downed trees and power lines. While the skies should clear up by the evening’s New Year’s Eve celebrations, authorities are still encouraging drivers to stay home if they can as driving conditions could continue to be hazardous.
The rain should start to dissipate around 5 p.m. or 6 p.m. Saturday, Brooke Bingaman, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service said, and Sunday is forecasted to be a completely dry day. It’ll be the only break, though, as wet weather is expected to start again on Jan. 2 and continue through the week.
Another moderate to strong atmospheric river is expected to hit the area again on Jan. 4 and 5. “Our soils will not be dried out by then,” Bingaman said. “All the impacts we’re seeing today will reoccur or be a little worse next week.” That means creeks and streams could overflow and the roadways could be dangerous again. Even if the rain stops, mudslides could still continue, Bingaman said, even a week afterward. “We can forecast the rain but we can't forecast when the soil will stop moving,” she said.A flood advisory is in effect until further notice for Sonoma County, and until 2 p.m. for Contra Costa county and until 6 p.m. for Marin County. A flood watch is in effect for San Francisco until further notice.
