The San Diego Humane Society's dispute with an Arizona counterpart over what it did with the hundreds of missing pets is intensifying
318 rabbits and other former pets were sent to the Humane Society of Southern Arizona last month; most are now missingDr. Gary Weitzman, president and CEO of the San Diego Humane Society, and other animal advocates’ concerns grew when the Tucson shelter declined to share any information about the unnamed shelter, saying it wanted to remain anonymous.
That’s when she began working with other animal rescues and advocates from Las Vegas, Arizona and San Diego to rescue some of the animals still at the Tucson shelter.Last week, they met in Arizona to rescue some, and she brought 24 home with her. “I was asked if we would take them in, and because of what these animals have been through, I said yes,” said Fenella Speece, president of the rescue.Steve Farley, CEO of the Humane Society of Southern Arizona, said Wednesday that nearly all of the remaining small animals have been adopted.
“We would never have transported those animals to them knowing it was one rescue, or an anonymous one. It’s absolutely unheard of and unconscionable,” Weitzman said. “In my 30 years in animal welfare, I’ve never heard of anything like this, but unfortunately there weren’t any alternatives,” Weitzman added.
