White House officials are weighing a performance evaluation of the CDC that would highlight the agency’s missteps in the pandemic

The audit would likely highlight key missteps like its failure to deploy working test kits, and also attempt to reassess the nation’s Covid-19 death toll by counting only those Americans who died directly from the disease. Some White House officials suspect the overall figures are inflated because they include those who had coronavirus but could have died from other causes.

Others held out and didn’t apply, believing they’d get a better deal in future funding rounds aimed at centers that see mostly low-income patients. Yet if they got any money from an early distribution, they now can’t tap into Medicaid-specific aid.One major Illinois provider has lost over $1 million so far, and has an operating budget of $67 million.

“It is unclear why these providers did not take advantage of that opportunity … only to now want to seek funding,” the spokesperson wrote.
