EXCL: White New Cross Fire survivor says police used racist language to describe victims by S_Fleary1
A WHITE survivor of the New Cross Fire says police used racist language to describe victims and survivors of the fire.
He says his life was ruined after the fire and the police made things worse. I was getting a hard time by the police,” he said. Mr Hastings was 21 years old at the time, and said he asked the police why he was sitting in a police cell in Brockley Police Station in southeast London. On another occasion after the fire, he said: “They got me in the car, four police came round and picked me up and put me in the car.Mr Hastings said he was surrounded my police officers in the car, with two officers in the front and two in the back and he was sat in the middle.
But he said the police found him and would phone the college and turn up unexpectedly and pull him out of class.Mr Hastings said he only met the Ruddock family by chance when he was involved in a motorcycle accident in 1976. He said Paul’s younger sister, Yvonne Ruddock, was excited to be having a party to celebrate her sixteenth birthday.“I told her ‘yes I will come to your party’ and that’s how I got invited,” he added. He said he spent most of the day driving Paul around in his car getting food and drinks for the celebration later that evening.
Mr Hastings said that is when Paul’s mother jumped up and Paul jumped up out of his sleep and went running out the door. Paul initially made it out of the fire alive and was standing next to him in New Cross Road, watching his family home go up in flames. While he stood outside in disbelief, he says he witnessed “about five or six” people jumping out of the windows to escape.
Many in the black community at the time believed the fire was started deliberately in a racist attack. In 1981, the first inquest into the 13 deaths returned an open verdict. In 2004, the coroner who concluded the second inquest also returned an open verdict. But he did accept the fire was started deliberately and said the evidence suggested it was started inside the house when an armchair was set alight. He rejected the idea that it was a racist attack.
“A few people knew that I had been involved in the fire, by and large, nobody ever said anything about it really.
