The White Sox hitters were never able to crawl out of the first-inning hole.
But it wasn’t that error that bothered Velasquez the most. It was another start filled with walks. In just 8.2 innings, Velasquez has now issued six walks.Still, there were some silver linings from his start. Velasquez was able to settle down after the rough first inning to give the Sox another 3.2 innings of scoreless ball. That kept the team in the game, while also taking a bit of the load off the bullpen. Velasquez chalks that up to his maturity as a veteran.
“It would turn into a spiral effect knowing that the game would’ve probably been 6-0, 7-0. The fact that I limited the damage and kept them within four, I’m pleased with. But, still, it comes down to the execution part, knowing that I could’ve executed a little bit better.” Giolito is expected to miss at least one more start, so the White Sox may need Velasquez to take the bump again. If that’s the case, he hopes to finally cross the 100-pitch threshold this season.
