Whitworth Leisure Centre closure sparks concern over future of Rossendale sports services
The arms-length leisure organisation which operates Whitworth Leisure Centre in Rossendale, which is set to close in July, has been asked to produce an updated business plan for councillors on a borough scrutiny committee.
Earlier this year, the trust’s management changed. Former boss Ken Masser departed and Samantha Sandford became the new chief executive. A section titled Corporate Risks has two areas highlighted in red, meaning ‘high-risk’. One is sustainability of the council’s medium-term financial strategy. The other is the impact of the covid pandemic on the financial sustainability of council-owned leisure assets.
The East Lancashire Empty Homes scheme was a government-backed project with Rossendale Council, other councils and a property firm called AAAW which collapsed, as previously reported. But it continues impacting on Rossendale Council and could ultimately cost £8million, it has been said.
