Marvel Cinematic Universe characters debate who broke the Multiverse in a new TikTok. The idea of alternate realities has been alluded to several times throughout the MCU as early as 2013's Thor: The Dark World, though the concept of the Multiverse was first mentioned explicitly by the Ancient One in 2016's Doctor Strange. Now, the somewhat enigmatic concept is set to play a huge role in the MCU's Phase 4 stories.
The Multiverse got a proper introduction on Disney+ during WandaVision as Scarlet Witch was established as a nexus being. This was later elaborated on in Loki with the introduction of the Time Variance Authority and the Timekeepers before Sylvie destroys the Sacred Timeline and breaks the Multiverse open by killing the Kang the Conqueror variant . The animated series What If...? then explored the various possibilities for alternate stories.
Whether or not he is actually to blame, Strange will have to deal with the ramifications of his actions in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Perhaps that MCU movie will deal directly with the question of who broke the Multiverse considering Strange and Wanda are set to play prominent roles, with Loki and Sylvie reportedly appearing as well. Perhaps it is a culmination of all of their actions that caused the Multiverse to break open. .
