: Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali is the 100th recipient of the Nobel Peace prize, and was awarded for his role in resolving his nation’s 20-year military stalemate with Eritrea over a border dispute.
Ahmed, 43, was favourite to win the prestigious accolade this year alongside Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg, 16. He was awarded for his efforts to “achieve peace and international cooperation,” the Committee said. It added: “The prize is also meant to recognise all the stakeholders working for peace and reconciliation in Ethiopia and in the East and Northeast African regions.”Some 301 candidates were nominated this year, including 78 organizations.
Abiy, a former intelligence officer, has been credit with pushing limited economic and political reforms in Ethiopia, and working to mediate disputes between Kenya and Somalia and brokering talks between factions in Sudan. But he faces awakened ethnic rivalries in at home, where millions of people have been displaced by recent violence.including former U.S.
